SERIAL CASTING
Serial casting is a noninvasive, non-surgical procedure that helps increase the range of motion around a joint. Serial casting is more commonly performed in the lower extremity. The process involves wearing a well-padded cast, which is used to immobilize the joint. The joint is placed in an optimal position and range within the cast. Typically casts are worn for 2 weeks. The cast is removed and ranges of motion are re-measured. Casts may be reapplied if the optimal range has not been achieved for the particular joint. After final removal of a cast orthotic intervention in the form of bracing is required in order to maintain the joint position and the range that has been gained. Physiotherapy is recommended post serial casting.
